INTRODUCING HENRIETTE STEFFENSEN COPENHAGEN

If you've ever slipped into a Henriette Steffensen signature fleece, you'll understand why it has such a loyal following. Soft, comfortable and wonderfully easy to wear, it brings a little more polish to those everyday layers we reach for constantly.

Henriette Steffensen Copenhagen is a Danish clothing brand founded in 2003 by designer Henriette Steffensen. Based in Copenhagen, the company remains founder-owned today, with Henriette continuing to lead the design of the collection.

The range is centred around comfortable, beautifully considered clothing that works with real life — from relaxed fleece layers and cardigans to dresses, trousers and practical accessories. The aesthetic is understated rather than trend-led, with natural colours, easy silhouettes and fabrics designed to be worn together.

At Jane Young, we love Henriette Steffensen for exactly that reason: these are pieces that make getting dressed feel effortless, while still looking wonderfully put together.

INTRODUCING HENRIETTE STEFFENSEN COPENHAGEN
THE STORY BEHIND HENRIETTE STEFFENSEN

THE STORY BEHIND HENRIETTE STEFFENSEN

Henriette Steffensen's story actually began before the womenswear label that carries her name today. In the 1990s, Henriette started ‘Growing Up’, a children's clothing business, making the clothes herself and selling them from a small shop in Copenhagen.

It was customers and retailers who encouraged her to turn her attention towards womenswear. That led to the launch of Henriette Steffensen Copenhagen in 2003, bringing her practical approach to design into a collection for women.

More than two decades later, the business remains independent and founder-owned. It is a relatively small company, with around five employees, but its reach is considerably larger, with the brand sold through more than 950 shops around the world.

Today, the company brings together three distinct labels. Growing Up continues to offer clothing for babies and children, Henriette Steffensen Copenhagen is the womenswear collection we stock at Jane Young, and Carl by Steffensen has offered menswear since 2019.

There is something particularly appealing about that history. Henriette's approach began with making clothes herself and understanding how people actually wanted to wear them — and that practical, personal perspective remains central to the collection today.

THE HENRIETTE STEFFENSEN SIGNATURE FLEECE

The fleece is arguably the fabric that Henriette Steffensen is best known for, and there is considerably more to it than you might expect from looking at the finished garment.

The brand's signature fleece is made from 70% polyester, with a minimum of 50% of that polyester recycled, and 30% viscose. It is woven in Italy and was developed specifically for Henriette Steffensen rather than being a standard fabric simply selected from a supplier's collection.

That distinction matters because the fabric is designed around the way the clothes are intended to be worn. It has a soft, comfortable handle that makes it ideal for relaxed layers, while the structured quality of the fabric gives pieces enough shape to look considered rather than purely sporty.

The fleece is also certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100, Product Class I — the strictest product class, used for items intended for babies and infants. The brand's wider materials are covered by the same certification.

Fleece is only part of the story, too. Henriette Steffensen also works with a jersey made from 96% viscose and 4% elastane, alongside a 95% organic cotton and 5% elastane quality, both produced in Portugal. A newer hemp collection adds another material to the range.

At Jane Young, we think this attention to the fabric is what makes the fleece so special. It is comfortable enough for everyday life, but polished enough that you never feel as though you've simply put on “something cosy”.

THE HENRIETTE STEFFENSEN SIGNATURE FLEECE
WHERE IS HENRIETTE STEFFENSEN MADE?

WHERE IS HENRIETTE STEFFENSEN MADE?

Henriette Steffensen's production journey is distinctly European, with different stages taking place in specialist locations across the continent.

The signature fleece fabric is woven in Italy, while the brand's jersey and cotton qualities are produced in Portugal. Once the fabrics are ready, cutting and sewing take place in Lithuania, before finished garments make their way to customers.

There are some lovely details behind the smaller elements, too. The brand's gros grain ribbon is woven in Denmark, with around 100,000 metres produced each year. The cotton itself is grown in India and Turkey before being dyed in Spain.

Henriette Steffensen describes its collection as entirely European produced, using carefully selected factories.

There is also a no waste line, where limited-edition pieces are created using leftover materials from the main production process — a simple but tangible way of making use of fabric that might otherwise be left over.

THE HENRIETTE STEFFENSEN COLOUR PALETTE

Colour is a quiet but important part of Henriette Steffensen's appeal. Rather than reinventing its palette every season, the brand develops colours inspired by the natural world — from pale limestone and warm sand through beige, grey, brown and green, all the way to deeper shades of black granite and slate.

There are cooler influences, too. Think North Sea blues, soft heather-moor pinks and the rich greens of coniferous forests. The result is a beautifully understated palette that feels calm, sophisticated and incredibly easy to live with.

At Jane Young, we particularly love the way these colours work together. The brand develops its shades with European mills and deliberately creates colours that can be combined across different fabrics and seasons. So a cardigan you buy this year doesn't suddenly become difficult to wear when next season arrives — it can sit comfortably alongside a new piece further down the line.

Sand is one of the brand's recurring core shades, alongside Soft Black and Off White, while Moss Green brings a little more depth and colour without losing that natural feel.

It's a clever approach to building a wardrobe: choose one beautiful layer, then gradually add complementary pieces rather than having to start from scratch every season.

Our Henriette Steffensen collection is centred around the relaxed, comfortable pieces that make this Danish label so easy to love.

You'll find the signature fleece across easy layers including ponchos, high-neck tops and skirts, alongside softer everyday pieces designed to work effortlessly with the rest of your wardrobe. The collection extends beyond clothing, too, with practical accessories including scarves, wrist warmers and headbands.

We particularly enjoy the way the range allows you to create a complete look around the same fabric family. A beautifully soft fleece layer can be paired with a coordinating accessory for colder days, or balanced with simple trousers and understated jewellery when you want your outfit to feel a little smarter.

The collection is designed around comfort, but that doesn't mean compromising on style. Relaxed proportions, considered colours and tactile fabrics give even the most casual pieces a polished finish.

What is Henriette Steffensen fleece made from?

Henriette Steffensen's signature fleece is made from 70% polyester, with a minimum of 50% of the polyester recycled, and 30% viscose. The fabric is wo-ven in Italy and was developed specifically for the brand.

How does Henriette Steffensen fit?

Main garments generally run from XS to XL, with selected knitwear available in S/M and L/XL. Fit varies between styles, with some pieces offering a loose, more generous cut and others described as a normal fit. Jane Young provides garment measurements on this page, including back lengths, and our team can help on 01636 703511.

Is Henriette Steffensen fleece warm?

The signature fleece is designed as a comfortable, breathable layer rather than a specialist thermal garment. We think of it as an ideal mid-layer for cooler days, particularly underneath a coat or alongside other Henriette Steffensen pieces.

How do I wash Henriette Steffensen fleece?

Care instructions can vary between fabrics and individual garments, so always check the care label on your particular piece before washing. Henriette Stef-fensen publishes care guidance for its fleece, jersey and cotton qualities, and if you're unsure about how to care for something you've bought from Jane Young, give us a call and we'll be happy to confirm the correct advice.
